AkzoNobel Supports China’s Deep-Sea Drilling Breakthrough
China recently launched the Dream, its first domestically designed and built ultra deep-sea drilling vessel, protected by over 300,000 liters of AkzoNobel’s International® marine coatings.
At almost 180 meters long, the Dream can drill as deep as 11,000 meters below the ocean’s surface, reaching into the Earth’s crust and upper mantle. This impressive vessel is set to take on various missions, including deep-sea resource exploration, scientific drilling, and marine research.
Tailored Protection for Tough Conditions
The Dream faces some of the ocean’s most challenging environments. AkzoNobel’s International products were applied across the vessel—from the hull and deck to the engine room and ballast tanks—to provide long-lasting protection against corrosion, fouling, and extreme weather.
Simon Parker, Director of AkzoNobel’s Marine and Protective Coatings business, shared:
“We are proud to have supported this landmark project. By developing a custom solution, we ensured the Dream is ready to handle unpredictable conditions and deliver long-term performance.”
Captain Hu Lin of the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey Bureau added:
“This vessel is a significant milestone for China’s deep-sea exploration capabilities. AkzoNobel’s high-quality coatings and technical support have been vital to preparing the Dream for its missions.”
Built for the Elements
The Dream is designed to endure super typhoons and operate at sea for up to 120 days. It features advanced International coatings, including:
- Intershield 300 for superior corrosion resistance.
- Intersmooth 7465Si to combat fouling.
- Interthane 990 for exceptional weather durability.
Continuing a Tradition of Excellence
The Dream joins an elite list of vessels supported by AkzoNobel, including China’s first domestically built cruise ship, the Adora Magic City, and the country’s first icebreaker, Xuelong 2. AkzoNobel remains committed to innovation, ensuring vessels worldwide are equipped to face the demands of modern exploration.
