Intersleek® was launched in 1996 as the first patented biocide-free coating for the shipping industry. Twenty-one years later, it now has more than 5,500 applications and has helped save over $3 billion in fuel costs.

Intersleek 21st Anniversary

Intersleek® has set new standards for efficiency, performance and sustainability in the marine industry.

  • Performance - Long-term efficiency, fuel savings
  • Innovation - Pioneering slime release technology
  • Sustainability - Carbon credits, biocide-free

AkzoNobel’s award-winning Intersleek® range includes Intersleek® 1100SR, which combats the age-old slime challenge, as well as the recently launched Intersleek® 1000.

Both products demonstrate the importance of providing choice and diversity to the industry by developing coatings that recognize the differing preferences and operational requirements of ship owners and operators looking to invest in more sustainable hull coatings.

Intersleek® 1100SR

The first free biocide free fouling control coating featuring patented Slime Release technology that combats micro fouling on ships' hulls, maintaining performance throughout the docking cycle. It delivers outstanding macro and micro fouling control with improved static resistance, even in warm waters and is suitable for slow steaming. Slime that does build up during static periods is released by the movement of the ship through water. As a result vessels can achieve reduced drag, improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.

The proof is in the polymer...

The new patented fluropolymer in Intersleek® 1100SR  has been developed by enhancing the slime resistant polymer groups used in earlier generations of Intersleek®. The tailored surface chemistry of this new technology specifically influences and resists the adhesion and settlement of organisms that make up slime colonisation.

Slime composition

Slime is a complex, varied and dynamic organism predominantly made up of bacteria and diatoms. There are thousands of individual species in the oceans that can result in varying slime film thicknesses, textures, compositions, and surface roughness on ships’ hulls. Slime begins to cultivate as soon as the vessel enters the water as bacteria populate the substrate and excrete Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS). EPS is what makes the surface feel "slimy" to touch.

The make-up of marine slime or biofilms is so diverse that samples from one part of a vessel could be completely different to biofilms from a few metres away. The composition of biofilms, show that they vary by geographic location, time of the year and vessel activity.

This research resulted in a new patent for controlling slime on ships' hulls and we believe that we now have industry leading insight into slime formation, settlement, release and its impact on vessel operating efficiency.

Unrivalled expertise and experience in foul release coatings

With over 17 years experience in foul release coatings we are very much aware of the performance characteristics of the technology on ships in service. International® Paint launched the first and original silicone based Intersleek® 425 in 1996, available for fast craft. In 1999 Intersleek®700 silicone technology was introduced delivering the benefits of foul release to deep sea scheduled vessels.

In 2007 the introduction of Intersleek® 900, the original fluoropolymer technology, meant that foul release was available for all vessels above 10 knots. And now Intersleek®1100SR becomes, the first ever slime release coating for all vessels, even in warm waters and slow steaming. With over 1,600 individual applications, Intersleek® has the largest foul release track record within the industry. The Intersleek® brand is proven to deliver the very highest levels of fouling control.

"Intersleek® is the latest in a continuing evolution of products from International® Paint designed to deliver significant through life operational, environmental and commercial benefits for vessel owners and operators worldwide".

Intersleek® 1000

Intersleek® 1000 is our latest fouling control with Lanion technology, incorporating bio-renewable raw material. It is exceptionally smooth with very low levels of average hull roughness. This, combined with excellent resistance to fouling, means that all vessels can benefit from this latest fouling control technology.

The first fouling control coating to use a patented technology that incorporates bio-renewable raw material to deliver enhanced vessel performance throughout the dry-docking cycle. Based on patented technology, Lanion enables hulls coated with Intersleek® 1000 to maintain an ultra-smooth surface, reducing drag and lowering a vessel's fuel consumption and emissions.

Use of bio-renewable raw material from sheep's wool in our patented technology allows us to give the sustainable fouling control at the prices of SPC Technology.

Independently validated fuel and emission savings

Intersleek® 1000 has generated 1,500 carbon credits over a two year period representing an independently verified fuel saving of 6% by RINA services and The Gold Standard.

Enhanced vessel performance through smooth hull

Intersleek® 1000 provides smooth film leading to improved efficiencies, which is comparable to ultra-performing self-polishing copolymer antifoulings.

Intersleek® 1000 is eligible to generate Carbon Credits

Intersleek® 1000 is eligible for the generation of Gold Standard Intersleek® carbon credits following the award-winning AkzoNobel methodology. For every tonne of avoided CO2 emissions, the vessel operator can be awarded a single carbon credit after converting to Intersleek®1000. From the first claim, Intersleek® 1000 applies to one vessel generated over 1,500 carbon credits representing an average fuel savings of 6% in the last two years of service.

"Gold Standard Intersleek® Carbon Credits are generated from an award-winning pioneering methodology."
