AkzoNobel and Tesella win leading IT award with Big Data and Analytics Project to cut CO2 emissions.

A project by Tessella and AkzoNobel Marine Coatings to provide accurate and comprehensive fuel efficiency assessments of coatings for ship hulls, has won the Big Data and Analytics Project of the Year category at the 2016 UK IT Industry Awards, the benchmark for outstanding performance in the UK computing industry.
Tessella worked collaboratively with AkzoNobel Marine Coatings to develop Intertrac Vision, the first ever tool for the shipping industry to accurately predict the performance of coating technologies.
Intertrac Vision uses billions of data points of vessel routes and fouling risk (whereby plants and animals grow on ship hulls) combined with advanced analytics techniques, proprietary algorithms and models to provide accurate and comprehensive assessments of coatings. It generates a full cost-benefit analysis, which details estimated fuel consumption, fuel cost, and CO2 emissions, identifying the most fuel efficient option in different scenarios.
The project was designed to be made available to AkzoNobel customers on-site. The application was therefore developed for tablet devices which need to be able to work offline. This is a shining example of mastering big data analytics using billions of data points on devices with restricted storage and computing power.
Michael Hindmarsh, Global Marketing Manager, Deep Sea Dry Docking, Marine Marketing, AkzoNobel said: “Intertrac Vision has been successfully taken up in hundreds of consultancy engagements since its launch. There is strong evidence it is directly resulting in increased sales, and our shipping customers have made savings of up to 9% through improved ship fuel efficiency. Intertrac Vision has also made a major contribution to promoting AkzoNobel as technological leaders in the shipping industry, and its success has built internal momentum which is fuelling further business focused big data projects.
David Hughes, Senior Project Manager at Tessella, added: “This project is a great example of how data, collaboration and innovation can come together to create something that has never been seen before. It takes complex data sets and presents them in an easy to use way, which improves everyday decision making. Intertrac Vision is a one of a kind app that has the potential to change how the marine industry operates when it comes to choosing coatings for ships. For it to be recognised and to be presented with such a coveted award is a testament to all the hard work our team and AkzoNobel put in to making Intertrac Vision a success.”
