Reederei Nord's Sustainable Shipping Journey
with Intercept 8500 LPP
Reederei Nord, a prominent ship management company, is actively pursuing initiatives to meet its decarbonization goals and contribute to a more environmentally friendly shipping industry. This case study highlights the company's adoption of advanced hull coatings, specifically utilizing Intercept ® 8500 LPP, to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
Decarbonization Goals and Compliance
Reederei Nord is steadfast in meeting international regulations and standards to cut emissions in the shipping industry. The company is committed to aligning with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. To reach these ambitious targets, Reederei Nord is embracing innovative technologies, such as advanced hull coatings.
Performance and Visual Inspections
Two Aframax tankers were drydocked after five years of service. Both vessels underwent complete visual checks, encompassing both above and below waterline inspections which confirmed good visual performance of Intercept 8500 LPP.
Sustaining Performance
The LR2 tanker NORDMARLIN has been using the Intercept 8500 LPP coating for around 18 months. Around 71% of its journey time has been through regions with a high to very high fouling risk. The vessel has maintained more than 68% activity at speeds >3 knots, with an average speed of 13 knots covering approximately 6,000 sea miles per month. Performance data evaluations indicate no decline in power or speed, highlighting the effectiveness of the coating. This consistent performance is in line with Reederei Nord’s commitment to lower carbon emissions and promote sustainability in the shipping sector.
Inspections and drydockings of their Aframax tankers have further affirmed the success of these sustainability endeavours.
Nordmarlin
A representative from Reederei Nord commented:
‘‘We are pleased to be working with International in monitoring the performance of our vessel NORDMARLIN utilizing Intercept 8500 LPP. This innovative fouling control coating has significantly contributed to reducing drag, fuel consumption, and CO₂ emissions. Notably, there has been no measurable decline in powering and speed after 18 months in service. This achievement aligns with our decarbonization goals and contributes to a more sustainable shipping industry. We value our partnership with International and look forward to continued success.’’
